LUMBER GRADING

At the Hudson Company, we follow the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA / NOFMA) guidelines for grading wood, which means we can ensure that we’re supplying both the highest quality wood available, and the most appropriate kind of lumber for each project. Every piece of Hudson Company wood is carefully inspected and categorized to meet or surpass industry standards. Lumber grading is determined by how much natural variation exists within each piece of wood. Like the unexpected quirks that give an historic house its charm, wood that has a great deal of natural variation is known as “character grade.” Conversely, wood that’s free of variation is known as “clear.” The Hudson Company offers high quality wood of every grade, from “character” to “clear,” and everything in between. We encourage our clients to learn more about lumber grading and get to know the traits of each type as they choose the perfect wood for their projects.

CHARACTER GRADE

Known for its natural grain irregularities, mineral streaks, and both sound and open knots, character grade lumber contains a mix of heart and sap woods. Its color variations are visible throughout each board face.

LIGHT CHARACTER GRADE

Like character grade, light character grade wood has a mix of markings and some color variation, but less so, and it has fewer visible knots.

SELECT GRADE

Select grade wood has a mostly consistent color throughout the wood face, and a small quantity of pin knots.
