Reclaimed Chestnut is lightweight and fine grained, beloved by scientists for its role as a “witness tree”—a species whose physical footprint provides a record of natural history. Chestnut once covered a quarter of the Appalachian canopy, but during the American Chestnut Blight (1900-1950) nearly 4 billion trees were lost. Reclaimed chestnut is prized for its warm hues and feathery grain, as well as its essential role in recording the complex story of American forests.
