Featured Design Installation: A Brooklyn Brownstone Reimagined

As a part of a move from Manhattan to Brooklyn, a New York family took on the exciting, albeit daunting, task of not only renovating but, completely redesigning a Carroll Gardens brownstone.

Reimagining this particular Brownstone included opening up the interior spaces to more light, rejoining the house into a single family residence (it had previously been three apartments), and refreshing both the rear and the front facades.

Led by Lang Architecture, the interior redesign included the installation of 1,000 square feet of The Hudson Company 6" Select Harvest White Oak [Rift and Quartered] flooring. This uniform 6" oak plank contributed significantly to helping the client and architect reach their goals of creating a fresh, modern interior that honored the rich, historic tradition of the home. Once installed, the Select Harvest flooring was finished on site.

Our client came to us with a very clear vision, they wanted to restore the historic elements of the house, but they also wanted it to feel fresh and modern—to bring light in and make the room as open and spacious as possible.” Drew Lang

Featured Design Installation: Passive House, Brooklyn, New York

As a part of the renovations for their 1860s Brooklyn townhouse, Laura Mackall and Robert Marley chose to incorporate two Hudson Company Reclaimed flooring products into their project: Reclaimed White Pine [Surfaced] and Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face].

These two specific flooring products, with their historical character and sustainable footprint, were the perfect solution for the couple, as they embarked on updating not only their home's aesthetic, but also it's energy profile. As a 'Passive House,' the Mackall-Marley renovation focused on optimizing the way that the home retains and ventilates both warm and cool air. The townhouse's existing, thick perimeter walls made it an ideal candidate for this kind of a sustainably-minded modernization.

With Laura's father, architect Louis Mackall, and Gowanus-based Build With Prospect taking the lead on the project's design and build, The Hudson Company was able to provide the client with two custom flooring solutions: 3/4" x 6" Reclaimed White Pine [Surfaced] flooring and, additionally, 3,000 square feet of 3/4" x 9" Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face].

We should also note that both of the reclaimed flooring products have interesting origin stories: the White Pine [Surfaced] flooring was sourced from the Mackall-Marley townhouse itself and then custom re-milled by The Hudson Company in Pine Plains, New York. The Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face] used in the passive house project was a surplus batch of flooring, originally salvaged from a historic Phillip Morris Factory in Louisville, Kentucky and then later re-milled by The Hudson Company for The New Whitney Museum of American Art in 2015.

A Modern Oasis | The Hudson Company in Dwell Magazine

In 2005, actors David Alan Basche and Alysia Reiner purchased an abandoned townhouse in Harlem, NY. After teaming up with builder Nicolas Moons and architect Hannah Purdy, the husband and wife duo dedicated two years to renovating and reimagining the dilapidated home. Twenty four months later, the once-neglected space was transformed from a hollow shell to a modern oasis

Following the birth of their daughter a few years later, David and Alysia’s emphasis on sustainability and using recycled, reusable materials took on greater significance and became increasingly more important to the couple. Working with Alan and Alysia on blending reclaimed materials with their renovated contemporary town house, The Hudson Company utilized rough hewn, spalted maple to create a custom wooden countertop that contrasts the otherwise sleek, modern interior. Continuing upward to the second floor, Alan and Alysia chose to incorporate Hudson Company Mushroom Wood as a decorative accent wall with an organic and sculpted feel. Reclaimed from wooden mushroom-growing beds, this product is a hybrid of softwoods with deep, textural aesthetics and a rich functional history.

Take a closer look at the work we did inside David Alan Basche and Alysia Reiner’s Harlem home featured in the May 2015 issue of Dwell Magazine.
