Rolf Fehlbaum is the son of Willi and Erika Fehlbaum who founded Vitra, a company who began producing Eames chairs in 1957 when Rolf was only a teenager. 

Now, taking charge of the company, Rolf has crossed new boundaries bringing together such diverse inventory has that included Mies van der Rohe, Noguchi, Aalto, Corbusier and Lloyd Wright's Peacock chair. Before long Fehlbaum had gathered enough pieces to open his own museum near Tüllinger Mountain in Germany, which is now one of the largest collections of furniture on the globe.

Currently though Rolf has moved into collections of a much larger scale, specifically that of architecture, for the Vitra Campus. In a recent article from Cereal Magazine we see a look into this very diverse design playground which is summed up quite well with this quote from the author.

"Vitra’s stake in 21st century design is such that the shape it takes affects they way our homes and our workplaces look, and how the products we buy are made. In this wonderland curated by Erika and Willi’s eldest, drawing visitors in from near and far, design is a game played with deadly seriousness."

Behind The Scenes At The Hudson Company Mill

No matter where our wood is sourced - whether reclaimed from a decommissioned NYC Water Tank (below left) or from an abandoned Ohio Barn (below right) - all of it will, eventually, make its way to The Hudson Company Mill in Pine Plains, New York. 

Situated on seven acres in the Hudson River Valley, The Hudson Company Mill is the place where both Reclaimed and Select Harvest wood comes to be inspected, sorted, graded, defected, planed, sawn, and molded to meet the specific design needs of our clients and collaborators. 

It's inside the walls of our 30,000 square foot FSC Certified Mill that our team of craftsmen and women proudly create the custom products that will ultimately make their way into private residences, retail and commercial spaces, designer hotels, and top-notch museums. 

The Mill is our home away from home, an industrial-strength, creative laboratory and a wood paradise  - its the place where vision, materials, and craftsmanship come together and where future design solutions are born. You should stop by sometime...

Featured Design Installation: The Tuscany Hotel, New York

Originally built in 1928, The Tuscany Hotel is one of Manhattan's premier destinations for elegant rooms and stunning views. And the best view from The Tuscany is certainly to be had from the hotel's recently renovated 3,000 square foot 17th floor penthouse. Taking the lead on the interior redesign for the penthouse's main living area was Jessica Gracey for Gensler, who chose to incorporate 750 square feet of Hudson Company Reclaimed Mixed Oak [New Face] wood as a statement ceiling treatment.

Each member of the ceiling was sanded on all four sides and custom milled by The Hudson Company at varying widths and thickness [ranging from 1/2" x 2" - 2" x 2" x 3' to 10'] and then hand-finished on site with a custom oil based stain. The result is a one of a kind interior space that is at once dramatic and warm - an exceptionally comfortable getaway up at the top of The Big Apple.

INSPIRED BY: APPARATUS STUDIO | NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Part II in our Friday series features a multi faceted design studio in Manhattan founded by Jeremy Anderson and Gabriel Hendifar. APPARATUS was born from their first lighting fixture creation called Twig 5, which was the result of necessity when they wanted to light art in the hallway of their apartment. 

Available to visit by appointment only, their showroom, impressive lighting selection and collection of accessories result in a visually captivating scene. Apparatus has also combined with Brooklyn ceramicist Alice Goldsmith to create the Link Porcelain pendant as an examination of "the strength and vulnerability of the artist's porcelain chain".  

APPARATUS' distinctive products fill a void that they see is missing from the current market. Chandeliers, sconces and picture lights are created by a varied number of materials from around the world including spun brass, etched glass, horsehair and handmade porcelain.

Featured Design Installation: Park Central Hotel, New York

Located on 7th Avenue and just around the corner from Carnegie Hall, Manhattan's Park Central Hotel is a contemporary yet classic style New York City hotel. A highlight of the hotel's recent renovations is their stunning Park Kitchen Bar & Lounge, the centerpiece of the hotel, designed by Jeffery Beers International.

As a part of the interior redesign of the Park Kitchen, The Hudson Company developed and custom-milled 8,000 square feet of American Walnut into two distinct pre-finished flooring products to help the designers achieve their goals of creating a mid-century modern aesthetic: first, a cooler gray-finished flooring for the cocktail lounge and seating area as well as a warmer, amber-toned Herringbone patterned floor for the hotel's meeting room.

The Hudson Company Walnut floors for the Park Hotel were custom milled at a 5" face width to allow for glue-down installation. And in addition to the flooring for the Park Central's lounge and meeting room, The Hudson Company also custom milled Walnut stair treads and flooring for the Park Kitchen's catwalk.

Inspired By: Oliver Gustav Studio | Copenhagen, Denmark

We are beginning a new weekly series here at The Hudson Company Blog. Every Friday we will be featuring the people, places, or products that inspire us.  We hope that this new 'Inspired By' series will also be an inspiration to you.

Today we begin by sharing images from the beautiful studio of Oliver Gustav located in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

A creative consultant whose focus is on "artisanal and holistic interiors", Oliver's Studio also functions as a shop whose contents compliment the designer's tastes acutely. Here you'll find one of a kind pieces made of wood, stone, linen and ceramic along with marble or leather boxes by Michael Verheyden and with a variety of texturally compelling pieces that suite Oliver's signature look. His collection of larger scale works such as lighting and seating by Poul Kjaerholm complete the ensemble with flawless curation.

Our Select Harvest White Oak [Victoria Finish] floors are crafted from Select Harvest Rift and Quartered White Oak and then pre-finished with a custom low-VOC finish. As a part of The Hudson Company's Delta Collection - these pre-finished floors are custom milled at our Pine Plains, NY mill and are designed for accurate, efficient on-site installation.

The above photos show Select Harvest White Oak [Victoria Finish] in the forthcoming One Vandam Luxury Residential building. The new 14-story residence, with interiors by Studio DB, is located in New York's fashionable Soho district, and features 40,000 square feet of Hudson Company flooring.

Featured Design Installation: Passive House, Brooklyn, New York

As a part of the renovations for their 1860s Brooklyn townhouse, Laura Mackall and Robert Marley chose to incorporate two Hudson Company Reclaimed flooring products into their project: Reclaimed White Pine [Surfaced] and Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face].

These two specific flooring products, with their historical character and sustainable footprint, were the perfect solution for the couple, as they embarked on updating not only their home's aesthetic, but also it's energy profile. As a 'Passive House,' the Mackall-Marley renovation focused on optimizing the way that the home retains and ventilates both warm and cool air. The townhouse's existing, thick perimeter walls made it an ideal candidate for this kind of a sustainably-minded modernization.

With Laura's father, architect Louis Mackall, and Gowanus-based Build With Prospect taking the lead on the project's design and build, The Hudson Company was able to provide the client with two custom flooring solutions: 3/4" x 6" Reclaimed White Pine [Surfaced] flooring and, additionally, 3,000 square feet of 3/4" x 9" Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face].

We should also note that both of the reclaimed flooring products have interesting origin stories: the White Pine [Surfaced] flooring was sourced from the Mackall-Marley townhouse itself and then custom re-milled by The Hudson Company in Pine Plains, New York. The Reclaimed Heart Pine [New Face] used in the passive house project was a surplus batch of flooring, originally salvaged from a historic Phillip Morris Factory in Louisville, Kentucky and then later re-milled by The Hudson Company for The New Whitney Museum of American Art in 2015.
